School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

At Bairnsdale Primary School we follow the SWPBS framework that helps schools to plan and implement practices to improve educational and behaviour outcomes for all students. We, as a school, strive to build an inclusive environment for all to learn, play and connect.

Our school values were reviewed in 2025 by the students, parents and staff. At 754, we demonstrate the values of Respect, Connection, Courage and Kindness everyday.

Being respectful at 754 means we treat others the way we like to be treated, it also means we listen to other peoples’ ideas and opinions.

Being kind at 754 means we show care and empathy, help others when they need it, and use words and actions that make people feel safe and valued.

Being courageous at 754 means we try new things, speak up when something isn’t right, and keep going even when learning feels challenging.

Being connected at 754 means we understand our place in our community and respect the land we learn on, building a strong sense of belonging for everyone.

These values are embedded into the Curriculum; the expected behaviours, as described in the Matrix of Expectations, are explicitly taught at each year level. We also acknowledge expected behaviours as a whole school.

Teaching Expected Behaviours

At 754, we explicitly teach students the behaviours we expect across all areas of our school. Our Behaviour Matrix aligns with our school values of being Respectful, Kind, Courageous and Connected, providing a consistent framework for what these values look, sound and feel like in different settings.

Staff regularly model, practise and revisit these expectations with students, helping them understand how to make positive choices in the classroom, yard and other school environments. We use the continuous teaching practice of Tell-Show-Practice-Monitor Reteach.

By explicitly teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours, we support all students to develop the skills they need to be successful, respectful and connected members of our school community.

Positive Acknowledgement of the Expected Behaviours

At 754, we believe that recognising and celebrating positive behaviour is essential to building positive relationships and an inclusive school culture.

Our staff acknowledge students when they demonstrate our school values and expected behaviours, both in the classroom, yard and specialist classes. This may be through a single positive action or consistent demonstration of positive choices.

We use a token system to recognise positive behaviour, with students able to collect and accumulate tokens to exchange for rewards developed with student input. Our Girtgan awards are also aligned with our school values, providing an opportunity to celebrate students across the school who demonstrate positive behaviours and make a positive contribution to our school community.

Through consistent positive acknowledgement, we celebrate student success, reinforce the behaviours we value and ensure every student feels recognised and encouraged to thrive.

Continuum of Procedures

At 754, our Continuum of Procedures provides a consistent, whole-school approach to responding to behaviours that do not align with our school values and expected behaviours.
The continuum outlines clear strategies and procedures for responding to both minor and major behaviours, ensuring staff respond consistently and fairly across the school. It works alongside our Behaviour Matrix to reinforce expectations and support students to understand and meet them.
Our approach focuses on addressing behaviour, re-teaching expectations and providing additional support where needed. This helps students develop the skills they need to make positive choices and be successful at 754, while supporting a safe, respectful and inclusive school environment.

Multi-Tiered System of Support

At 754, our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) approach uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support to ensure all students receive the right level of support to be successful.

  • Tier 1 – Universal Support: Positive behaviour expectations, teaching, acknowledgement and support provided consistently for all students across all settings.
  • Tier 2 – Targeted Support: Additional, targeted support for students who require further assistance to develop positive behaviour and engagement.
  • Tier 3 – Intensive Support: Individualised and intensive support for students with more complex or ongoing behavioural needs.

This approach ensures that behaviour support is proactive, consistent and responsive to individual student needs, while helping every student feel safe, connected and supported at 754.
