Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts program provides students from Prep to Year 6 with opportunities to explore, create and express themselves through a wide range of artistic experiences. Students develop their skills, knowledge and understanding through drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printmaking, textiles and mixed-media art.

Through hands-on learning, students are encouraged to experiment with materials, explore different techniques and develop their own creative ideas. Our program celebrates individuality, imagination and self-expression while building confidence, persistence and pride in students’ work.

Students are also introduced to a range of Australian, Indigenous and international artists, cultures and artistic traditions, helping them understand how art can communicate ideas, stories, identity and experiences.

Throughout their primary years, students build a strong foundation of artistic skills while developing their ability to think creatively, take risks, solve problems and respond thoughtfully to artworks. We celebrate the creativity of every student and provide opportunities to share and showcase their artwork across our school community.

Physical Education

At Bairnsdale Primary School, our Physical Education program promotes active participation, teamwork, resilience, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Students develop their skills, knowledge and understanding across a wide range of sports and physical activities through engaging, inclusive and challenging experiences.

Our program provides opportunities for students to develop fundamental movement skills, learn game strategies, work collaboratively and demonstrate our school values of Respect, Kindness, Courage and Connection. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, support others and celebrate both individual and team achievements.

Students have the opportunity to represent Bairnsdale Primary School at District, Division, Regional and State levels, competing in a range of sports and events. Our school participates in cross country carnivals, athletics and a variety of interschool sporting competitions, providing students with opportunities to develop their skills and experience competition at increasingly higher levels.

We also value our strong connections with local sporting clubs and community organisations, which provide students with opportunities to experience different sports and learn from experienced coaches. Throughout the year, students may participate in coaching sessions and skill development programs in sports such as volleyball, cricket and hockey.

Through Physical Education and our community sporting partnerships, we aim to encourage every student to be active, have fun, develop their skills and discover a sport or activity they can enjoy throughout their lives.

S.T.E.M

At Bairnsdale Primary School, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) provides students with opportunities to explore, investigate, create and solve real-world problems. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, students develop curiosity, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, design solutions and learn from both success and failure. STEM learning connects classroom knowledge with practical applications, allowing students to explore concepts through science investigations, technology, engineering challenges, coding, robotics, design and mathematics.

Our STEM program promotes a hands-on, inquiry-based approach, where students work collaboratively to develop solutions and share their thinking. Through STEM, students build the skills, confidence and resilience needed to become creative problem-solvers and lifelong learners.

At Bairnsdale Primary School, we aim to inspire students to wonder, investigate, create and innovate as they prepare for an ever-changing world.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

We believe that technology is an important tool to support, differentiate and extend student learning. Prep – 6 students have access to 1:1 iPads and Laptops.

We have recently implemented a Digi Tech program at 754. Students have access to Lego Robotics, WeDo, Spike, BlueBots and Merge Cubes. The Merge Cube Lets you hold digital 3D objects, enabling an entirely new way to learn and interact with the digital world. Students can explore a galaxy in the palm of their hand, hold fossils and ancient artifacts, explore a DNA molecule, investigate the Earth’s core, dissect a virtual frog, and hold and share their own 3D creations.

Music

The Music program offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills through listening, performing, composing and responding to music. Students engage in hands-on learning, exploring a range of musical styles, cultures and traditions while playing a variety of classroom instruments.

Through active music-making, students foster creativity, confidence and self-expression, while developing communication, collaboration, and critical and creative thinking skills. The program also encourages an appreciation of music as an important form of personal and cultural expression.

Students in Grades 3–6 also have the opportunity to participate in Instrumental Music lessons, developing their skills and confidence in learning and performing an instrument.

In addition, Didgeridoo lessons are offered to male Koorie students, providing opportunities for students to connect with culture, music and traditional practices through learning and playing this culturally significant instrument.

People, Place & Culture

The ‘People, Places and Culture’ program encourages students to become curious, informed and respectful members of their community. Students explore the Humanities and Personal and Social Capabilities curriculum through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

A strong focus is placed on the history, cultures and geography of our local area, including the rich history and continuing culture of the Gunaikurnai People. Students also develop an appreciation of Australia’s multicultural society and Australia’s connections with the wider world.

Additionally, the program explicitly teaches Personal and Social Capabilities alongside our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) values of Kindness, Courage, Connection and Respect. Through team challenges, cooperative learning and problem-solving activities, students build communication, inquiry, resilience, critical thinking, leadership and teamwork skills, preparing them to become thoughtful, active and compassionate members of their school and community.”
