Numeracy

At Bairnsdale Primary School, we believe numeracy is about much more than learning
mathematical skills—it is about understanding how mathematics helps us make sense of the world around us.

Our numeracy teaching provides students with opportunities to connect their learning to real-life situations, using practical, hands-on experiences to build understanding and confidence. Students are encouraged to explore mathematical ideas, ask questions, make connections, solve problems and explain their thinking.

We place a strong emphasis on problem solving, mathematical reasoning and productive risk-taking, supporting students to try different strategies, learn from mistakes and persevere when challenges arise. Through rich learning experiences, students develop the confidence and flexibility to apply their mathematical knowledge in familiar and unfamiliar situations.

Our teachers use assessment and ongoing observations to identify each student's individual learning needs. This enables us to provide point-of-need teaching, ensuring students receive targeted support, extension and challenge at the right time in their learning journey.

Our numeracy program is aligned with the Australian Curriculum Version 2.0, with a focus on developing strong mathematical knowledge and skills alongside the ability to apply mathematics confidently in real-world contexts. We aim to develop capable, confident and curious mathematicians who understand that numeracy is an essential part of everyday life and learning.
